Eric Lipton

Background

Eric Lipton has been working as a jounralist for 30 years at The Washinton Post and the Hartford Courant.  Lipton covered the attacks of 9-11 and has since been covering most happenings in the current government. As of the last few years, Lipton has been writing aboyut the Trump administration . Lipton investigates and reports incidents in all different areas of the government. Lipton has done loads of stories and has even published multiple highly-rated books. One story in particular is called "City In the Sky: The Rise and Fall of The World Trade Center." This story focuses on the atacks of 9-11 and all of the information that was released following the tragic events. Another story I found and read was named "Trump's Campaign To Subvert the Election." This article was posted to The New York Times and it is very clearly influenced by the left. The Entire article describes how Trump incited violence and is causing mayhem within our borders. This goes to show that the media portrays stories very differently depending on the agenda they must coincide with. Another story I found on the New York Times was called "City Had Been Warned of Fuel Tank 7 At World Trade Center." This article was published only 2 months after the attacks on the World Trade Center. Lipton discusses the fuel tank that was awkwardly placed in the middle of the building instead of underground like normal. This was a very popular topic at the time and everyone was curious to know what really happened. Eric Lipton seems to target the largest audience and report the news they want to hear.

Lipton has been a finalist and received many awards during his career including:

- 1992 Pulitzer Prize in Explanatory Journalism

- 2015 Pulitzer Price for Investigative Journalism

- 2017 Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting

Ronan Farrow: Investigative Journalist

By: Taylor Aiello

Ronan Farrow is a popular American journalist. He is best known for his investigative reporting of allegations of sexual abuse against Harvey Weinstein in 2017. This piece ispecific, was published in The New Yorker and had won the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service. Farrow also exposed additional allegations against Brett Kavanaugh, Eric Schneiderman, and Les Moonves. Today, he currently makes regular appearances on the NBC show, TodayMore specifically, he hosted the “Undercover with Ronan Farrow” on the Today show.

In Ronan Farrow’s, “From Aggressive Overtures to Sexual Assault: Harvey Weinstein’s Accusers Tell Their Stories,” several women report their accounts of sexual assault and harassment by Weinstein. The piece begins with Farrow going into detail about Harvey Weinstein’s life, and how he was a powerful man as a film executive. Farrow also explains that although Weinstein has faced assault allegations in the past, none of the claims have been supported by sufficient evidence. However, Farrow’s investigative piece differs in that he completed a ten-month investigation, where he was informed that between the 1990s and 2015, thirteen women had been sexually assaulted by Weinstein. Additionally, numerous people admitted to knowing about the unwanted sexual advances. Therefore, Farrow uncovered imperative information in the case against Harvey Weinstein.

In Farrow’s “Four Women Accuse New York’s Attorney General of Physical Abuse,” Eric Schneiderman is exposed for sexual misconduct. Now the ex-attorney general, Schneiderman denied all allegations made against him. Farrow disagreed and stated that “it wasn’t a gray area at all. This was activity that happened in many cases fully clothed outsider of a sexual context during arguments.”

In “Les Moonves and CBS Face Allegations of Sexual Misconduct,” Farrow exposes Les Moonves, the former C.E.O of CBS Corporation, of harassment and intimidation. Farrow reported six different accounts of women coming forward saying they have experienced abuse in the workplace at the hands of Moonves

Sheila Coronel

Sheila Coronel by Autumn Golden

This Is How Democracy Dies

In this article, Coronel describes how she is watching democracy die in the Philippines with the judge sentenced a reporter and an author to jail for an article and a crime that “didn't exist” at the time of publishing the article. She compares this to when dictator Ferdinand Marcos sent hundred of journalists, reporters, and politicians to jail in 1972 and shut down most news outlets at the same time. By withholding information to the public and/or penalizing journalists for sharing this information, democracy is falling from citizen's grasp.

Commentary: Still reeling from Duterte’s war on drugs, Manila’s poor hit hardest by COVID-19

Here, Coronel comments on how Duerete instructed officers to kill thousands of “suspected drug users and sellers” in order to combat drugs in Manila. This massacre on day one of his rule showed how little he cared for people and trying to get them the help they need to recover from the illness that is addiction. With the COVID-19 pandemic, the same is seen. Duerete does not seek to help those in need who get left behind and have no choice but to turn to “criminal” activity to try and sustain themselves and their families.

Opinion: A warning from the Philippines on how a demagogue can haunt politics for decades

In this article, Coronel begins by describing celebrations people had in America when Joe Biden was elected as the president in 2020. In her home country of the Philippines, celebrating is not as easy to come by. There, voting does not solve issues the way it appears to in the United States. In the ’70s, Ferdinand Marcos claimed himself as president and even held an inauguration to “solidify” it. He had the military on his side which allowed for this to take place. Over time as riots and protesting persisted, the citizens eventually ran him and his family out of the presidential palace which led them to flee to Hawaii. The current leader of the Philippines is a fan of Marcos and has shown signs of following in his footsteps of authoritarian rule with the way his campaign was funded by the Marcos family, and many of the family members holding positions in the government.

Independent Journalist - Tim Pool

Tim Pool has had a busy career in the journalism and media world.  Early in his career, Pool worked for mainstream companies like Vice and Fusion TV.  Nowadays, he has built his own media empire that helps him to produce his own independent works.

Growing up on the south side of Chicago, Pool saw a lot of terrible crimes and conflicts every day.  He knew it wasn’t just happening in his city either.  Places all around the world were struggling and were riddled with violence.  Pool left school at the age of fourteen and began live streaming protests.  The first live stream he did that gained a lot of recognition was the Occupy Wall Street protests in 2011.  Not only did Pool create livestreams for the event, but he also developed a new way to view the protests; from above.  As a foreshadow to his future entrepreneurship career, Pool developed a way to live-stream from a drone flying above the action.

His work during the Occupy protests got Pool national attention through NBC and other mainstream medias including Vice.   They offered Pool a position at Vice and he began writing articles for them.  While at Vice in 2013Pool wrote articles on the Gezi Park protests with Google glass and mass protests in Ukraine that led to the fall of the Yanukovych government.

Later in his career, Pool found himself at the Milwaukee riots in 2016 and discovered a possible line that he would not plan on crossing.  He found the events to be dangerous due to the escalating “racial tensions” By 2017 Pool is doing more independent work with stories like the “no-go zones” in Sweden.  He gained funding from other journalists to continue his research in Europe and eventually concluded that the so called “violent” situation with migrants in Sweden were timid compared to the common violence found in his hometown of Chicago.

Other than being a prominent media journalist and YouTuber, Pool is a media entrepreneur.  Some of his collaborations include a mobile app called Tagg.ly that puts watermarks on photos and co-founded a news company called Subverse (later named SCNR).  Pool has a wide range of viewers, but it presently followed by a majority of right-winged audiences.  Most of his articles have a political theme to them, though Pool does not seem to completely radical or severely conservative in his opinions.
